What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional Therapy (MFT) is a type of therapy used to improve overall health for people with orofacial myofunctional disoroders (OMD).  MFT is a series of progressive exercises that are designed to strengthen your tongue, lips, and throat muscles.  This  “re-wires” the connection of your brain to your oral structures which enable healthier function.

The result will be a happier, healthier you!

What are Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders?

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders are habits that create chronic diabilitating affects on our bodies.  The most common cause of OMD is the lack of nasal breathing.  In addition to not breathing with your nose, you could have open mouth posture, poor tongue postion and strength, and incorrect swallowing. There are serious consequences to these habits.  The symptoms from these dysfunctional habits include snoring /sleep apnea, chronic head/jaw pain, digestive trouble, chronic sinus/congestion just to name a few.

4 Goals of Myofunctional Therapy

There are 4 goals of Myofunctional Therapy.

1. Establish a correct tongue posture with your tongue on your palate.

2. Establish nasal breathing.

3. Correct an open mouth posture/mouth breathing.

4. Establish a normal swallow.

All Pieces of a Bigger Puzzle

The 4 goals of MFT will ultimately give you better quality of life.  All 4 goals strengthen and improve the function of your orofacial muscles. Myofunctional Therapy will teach your body the tools it needs to be able to function efficiently.

The “Bigger Pieces” of this puzzle include:

  • Snoring
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Orthodontics
  • Tongue Thrust
  • Headaches
  • Tongue-tie
  • Mouth Breathing
  • More

Myofunctional Therapy is not a band-aid. It teaches you how to heal yourself.

Digestive Issues

Chronic stomach problems can greatly impact a person’s daily life.  Improper swallowing, along with a tongue thrust can a part of an uncomfortable cycle.  A Myofunctional Therapist can assess the severity of the issue and give you the knowledge to correct it.

Mouth Breathing

Breathing through your nose is the way nature intended.  Breathing with your mouth open can cause changes in the shape of your face, chronic sinus trouble, poor dental health, sleep apnea, and many more poor health issues.  MFT will teach you how to breathe with your lips sealed. This will greatly improve your quality of life.

Snoring / Sleep Apnea

Sleeping quietly and soundly is extremely important for good health.  People who snore or have sleep apnea are at a much higher risk for heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and Alzheimer’s just to name a few. Not getting enough sleep or not getting good sleep is the #1 complaint of most people.  Myofunctional Therapy can help you learn to get the good sleep your body craves.

Tongue-Tie

You may or may not be able to see a tongue-tie.  However, your tongue might not be able to function properly.  A person with a tongue-tie can have difficulty swallowing correctly, have jaw pain, trouble nasal breathing, or might struggle with certain sounds in speech.  MFT can help identify your impairment and improve the proper function of your tongue.

Thumbsucking

Thumb sucking starts at a very early. It’s a way for a child to self soothe.  However, thumb sucking can cause life long negative effects. It can reshape the arch of the mouth, potentially creating future dental, sleep and digestive issues.  Along with learning to stop this habit, MFT can help retrain the lips and tongue needed for a healthy life.

Headaches

Chronic headaches can be debilitated.  Myofunctional Therapy is a way to potentially address the cause of your headaches.  We will look at jaw issues, sleep habits and history of sinus congestion.

Tongue Thrust

A tongue thrust can cause several adverse problems.  Digestivestive issues may be from an incorrect swallow due to the tongue thrust.  In addition, orthodontic success is dependent on the tongue not pushing through the corrections that have been made.   Myofunctional Therapy can “re-train” your tongue to help alleviate these issues.

Hello! I’m Cindy

BSDH, RDH, OMT

Cindy is a Colorado native. She was born and raised in Fort Collins. Cindy discovered early on that she had a strong desire to help people with their overall well being and chose to go to hygiene school. She has currently been practicing for 19+ years and loves that it has allowed her to get to know her patients on such a personal level and help them with their overall health.

Although Cindy was first introduced to Oral Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) during dental hygiene school, she never truly practiced it early on in her career. It took her seeing many of her patients with the telltale signs of myofunctional impairment taking a toll on their health to decide that she needed to learn more. Not just out of curiosity, but out of her innate desire to do everything she can to better her patient’s lives.

After seeing the effects it had on her own personal life with the ability to successfully treat the symptoms associated with long term TMJ pain and sleep apnea, she knew she was on to something special. This has given Cindy hope that she can help others in need (like herself) to not just improve their dental health, but their overall health and wellness.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve been getting along just fine.  Why do I need Myofunctional Therapy now?

Your body is  incredibly adaptable.  It learns to compensate for the impairments that you have developed.  Remember, the number one thing your body needs is air.  It will fight for it by any means.  This puts your body in a constant state of “flight or fight”.  Not only does this exhaust you on a daily basis but ages you as well.

Why is it important to breath with my nose?

It’s your nose’s job to clean the air your breathing.  When you take a breath with your nose, the air is warmed and humified.  Also , your nose filters the  air so there are less impurities in your lungs.

Would my child benfit from myofunctional therapy?

Absoultely!  Establishing healthy oral habits at an early age will help prevent a life time of chronic issues.  Together, we will work on the four goals of myofunctional therapy starting with the tongue.  The position of your child’s tongue will dictate the craniofacial bones grow.  It’s the tongue job to create a wide palate.  A narrow palate will cause a life time of airway restriction.  Your child could also be at a higher risk for behavioral issues, sleep apnea, misalignment of teeth leading to extensive orthodontics, chronic sinus congestions and an increase in dental decay.  This is just the tip of the iceberg!

How does therapy work?

Myofunctional Therapy is based on specific exercises designed for your needs. Your personalized plan will  improve your breathing, swallowing and tongue position.  MFT is about having an awareness of your tongue, lips, and nose.  If your tongue is in the roof of your mouth and your mouth is closed, your orofacial myofunctional disorders will begin to disappear.  This enables your body to start healing itself.

What is a tongue-tie?

A tongue-tie is a condition that you might be born with.  The position of attachment could restrict eating correctly, cause speech impediments, cause malformation of cranial growth, headaches and the list goes on.The severity of your tongue-tie will be evaluted for range of motion and function.

What’s the right age for Myofunctional Therapy?

The age you are today is the perfect age!  All ages benefit.  For obvious reasons, the sooner, the better.  However, why not take steps to feel better now?  New habits can be learned and better health achieved because of it!
